When my husband was in an auto accident, it turned our lives upside down. We lost our only reliable vehicle, and his injury caused us to lose our main line of income. To top it all, we were living 6,000 miles away from any friends or family as we had just recently moved to the Island of Hawaii. So to say our carefree lives turned utterly hectic would be an understatement.

Not having gone through something like this before we had no idea where to turn or what to do next. Once we knew my husband’s health care injuries were going to be taken care of we then focused on dealing with the financial fallout from all of this. Back on the mainland, we could efficiently use the internet to find help, a simple search for “personal injury attorney Tampa” for instance, would give us over ten thousand links of useful resources that could easily be followed up on with family or friends or word of mouth. But not having those personal resources at our disposal, an easy search for “auto accident attorney Tampa” turned into a constant back and forth of phone calls and internet searches based on information we gained from those.

Auto Accident: What Do You Do, Where Do You Turn

We had to ask on local social media groups and take advice from people we did not know in an area we were not familiar with. Just finding legal help was almost as nerve-wracking! The initial fray of phone calls when he was first in the accident. I was at home, not knowing what was happening or where he was.

We finally settled on a local attorney and put everything in his hands. Just knowing that we had someone on our side in all of this. Someone who was looking out for our best interests was a great relief. All the phone calls from insurance companies and other interested parties were directed towards his office. Things around the house started getting back to normal. Our attorney even helped us with managing the local web of health care providers and finding support and aid.

It took a long time. Emotions got high and low, and at times we just wanted it all to end. But we are so thankful that we found a reasonable attorney to help us throughout all of this. I’d hate to think of the way things would have turned out if we didn’t have someone holding our hand. Someone was pointing us in the right direction.

Now that we moved back to the mainland, should something like this ever happen again, at least we will be prepared and have more options.
